What is The Big Roll In Paradise?

Published by Tzer2 at 23:15 UTC, August 10th 2009

It seems that Nokia recently registered a rather peculiar trademark: The Big Roll In Paradise. It's described as being for "downloadable computer game software", and it's interesting to see Nokia's still registering new game-related trademarks as it indicates they're developing new franchises. But beyond that we've got no idea what this is, anyone got any suggestions?

Here's the trademark entry:

The Big Roll In Paradise trademark application

...but what the heck is it? Why would they choose such a weird name?

A quick internet search for "big roll" produces various lawn-laying services and a band called Zoot Money's Big Roll, neither of which seem particularly likely candidates for a game.

There was a classic text adventure on the ZX Spectrum called "The Worm In Paradise" but that too seems unlikely to be related to this game. However, if this writer had to lay bets about Big Roll it would be on it being some kind of adventure game (perhaps a new Dirk Dagger episode?). But it could be we will never know as many trademarks are registered for products that never ultimately appear.

Actually, just had a thought: in the "making of" video for Creatures Of The Deep the developers said at the end that they were working on a new game which involved rolling balls around a playing field. Could this trademark be the name of that game?

yup its a n-gage project by infinite dreams, the project as been known about some time, but nobody as ever got any details, pocket gamer once reported it as being called The Big Roll but now we know that is wrong b/c you have got the correct name first person to get anything worth while and correct.
nice work

IDreams has started marketing of their new iPhone game.

maybe it's not "knock" or "rock" but it will become "roll" your iPhone? ;) So this "The Big Roll In Paradise" may be some version of that game, but for n-gage? Probably in worse quality like Sims 3(look at that game on iPhone...) - unfortunettly:( (couse I'm big fan of nokia's phones, and won't move to iPhone, beacouse I need good phone for working in the first place and games are only addition... quite important, but addition;)

P.S. There is Meatal Gear Classic on Ovi Store,, shouldn't You make it's review? ;)

Whatever Big Roll is, it certainly wouldn't be on iPhone or any other non-Nokia platform.

Big Roll would be exclusive to Nokia platforms because Nokia are the publishers (the publisher gets to decide when and where a game is published). We know Nokia is publishing it because they're the ones who have trademarked the name.

Infinite Dreams would just be acting as the developers, they wouldn't have any control over where the game was published. It would be like Creatures Of The Deep, developed by Infinite Dreams but published and owned by Nokia.

I think you'll be interested in the phones Nokia's going to produce at the end of this year... ;-)

You are of course right, about what you are writing:) But I thought it just could be the same concept(from IDreams), but under other name/brand - developed both for n-gage and iPhone. But I agree it's very unlikely to be this way.

Moreover this registration made by Nokia gives some hope that n-gage is not so dead as some claims... I certainly would buy next "Metal Gear Solid Mobile" or "Reset Generation" game, but even better if they make such for my nokia phone:)

Even if N-Gage did disappear they could carry on publishing exclusive games on Ovi Store. I hope they do because Nokia's first party games have always been excellent.

Well... AAS and Ovi Gaming don't normally comment on unconfirmed leaks, but I can point some things out which are confirmed public knowledge:

-Nokia publicly announced a lot of stuff at the end of last year about their next Maemo Linux device: pocket-size, 3G / 3.5G HSDPA support, OMAP3, graphics acceleration, very high resolution touchscreen, high resolution camera, vertical and horizontal screen modes...

-During the worst part of the recession, when other parts of Nokia were cutting jobs, Nokia hired lots of new staff to their Maemo Linux department.

-Nokia have never used the phrase "internet tablet" for the next Maemo Linux device. They just call it a "device".

-Nokia's latest Symbian phones (N97, 5800, 5530 etc) use surprisingly slow chips, as if they're only meant to be mid-range and cheaper phones. That makes sense on the 5800 and 5530, they ARE cheaper devices, but the N97 is supposed to be an expensive high-end flagship. Nokia have previously used cutting edge chips in their highest end phones. It's as if there is a high-end device missing...

-There have been several interesting leaks throughout this year on many different tech sites and newspapers about the next Linux Maemo device, apparently called the "N900" or "Rover". Although they're unconfirmed, the number and detail of the leaks has greatly increased over time.

-Nokia recently registered two trademarks, Xseries and Cseries, both of which are officially described as being for mobile phones. So it looks like Nokia is about to launch two major new phone ranges.

-The next Maemo device apparently just passed its FCC test which implies that full-scale manufacturing should start in the near future.

If you read between the lines, it's relatively clear what Nokia has planned.

Thanks for posting! It's always great to see stuff in the comments threads. If you have any questions or requests do post them, and you can also post them in our forum (click on Forums at the top of the page).

I'll see what I can do about the Metal Gear review...

Isn't this the sequel to the Bounce Boing Voyage game from N-Gage? Saw a video of something similar running on N900.
