What will Nokia learn from the Failure of N-Gage?

Two weeks after Nokia announced that their N-Gage system was to be closed and the titles merged into Ovi Store, N-Gage old-hand Ewan delivers his verdict, looking at what Nokia did wrong, from support to marketing to community. More worryingly, Ewan also worries that similar errors might be being made with Nokia's other Software and Services.

Nokia announces the Nokia Booklet 3G mini-laptop preloaded with Ovi software

Nokia's entered the laptop world with their Nokia Booklet 3G, which you can see in a video embedded below. It's a 3G and Wi-FI compatible netbook with a 12-hour battery and a glass HD screen. It runs on Windows but comes preinstalled with a new version of Ovi Suite which will allow you to sync your phone to all of Nokia's Ovi services. We have no word yet on what this means for Ovi Store or Nokia's gaming strategy, but we will keep you posted. In the mean time you might want to have a look at our sister site All About Symbian's coverage of the announcement. Nokia's probably entering the laptop market partly to promote Ovi services and partly because so many phone network operators are selling mini-laptops.

Which Ovi Store games should we review?

There are something like 600 games in Ovi Store at the moment with over a hundred more being added every month, so we've obviously got a heck of a lot of reviews to get through. With that in mind, which games would you our readers like us to review? Leave a message in the comments section below and let us know. (Check that we haven't already reviewed it by visiting our Ovi Store games section.)

Annoyed with Ovi Store's search engine? Try our unofficial Ovi Store search instead...

Ovi Store's search function seems to be rather quirky and sometimes unreliable, so as a bit of an experiment we've set up an unofficial Ovi Store search system which uses Google's index instead of Nokia's. It's not perfect but it does some things better than the official search, and you may find it useful. You can use the search service below, let us know what you think!

What is The Big Roll In Paradise?

It seems that Nokia recently registered a rather peculiar trademark: The Big Roll In Paradise. It's described as being for "downloadable computer game software", and it's interesting to see Nokia's still registering new game-related trademarks as it indicates they're developing new franchises. But beyond that we've got no idea what this is, anyone got any suggestions?

How to install Ovi Store on the Nokia N95

If you have a Nokia N95 you might like to watch Ovi Gaming's video of how to install Ovi Store (this should work on most other Nokia phones too). It's very simple to do the installation, but if you're at all unsure about the process this video may make things clearer. As an alternative to the application, the video also shows how to access Ovi Store through the phone's web browser.

Correcting misconceptions about Ovi Store

Perhaps because of its "soft" launch, discussions of Ovi Store have brought up an amazing number of misconceptions about how it works, which devices are compatible, and what kind of content is on offer. Instead of simply repeating ourselves, we've tried to set the record straight in our Unofficial Ovi Store FAQ, which can also be reached from the "FAQ" links elsewhere on this site. If you have any questions you want answered about Ovi Store please read the FAQ first, and if there's still something you want answered post a message in this news item's comments thread.

Ovi Gaming mobile site

Just in case you've missed it, Ovi Gaming is now also available as a mobile website at ovigaming.mobi. It contains the same content as ovigaming.com but in a reformatted style which should work on the majority of mobile web browsers and screen resolutions. It should also load a lot more quickly and use much less data, which may be useful for those on a slow connection or with expensive data charges. Have a look and let us know what you think...
